Space probe launched January 1999, crashed into Mars on or about December 3, 1999. The mission failed, presumably due to a software error that misintepreted the deployment of the landing legs (see (2) below).
The mission was to collect data from the martian south pole. Mission also included Deep Space 2. The doomed Mars Climate Orbiter was on a sister mission.
