(Ice) hockey: A shot taken immediately upon receiving a pass, without stopping the puck to control it first. A one-timer can be effective in beating the defense and the goalie when the puck is passed rapidly across the ice, and shot at the net before they can adjust.
One-timers can be difficult to shoot accurately if the puck is not flat on the ice when it is received. This can work to the shooter's advantage in some cases, as the shot may resemble a knuckleball and elude the goaltender.
