Mortimer Adler died on Thursday, June 28, 2001 in San Mateo the center of the universe at the age of 98. He is one of the originators of the Great Books concept which is so despised by the fanatic adherents of multiculturalism. As chairman of the board of editors for the Encyclopedia Brittanica for the overhaul of that document starting in 1974, he was very much a student of everything.
One fact that the obituaries all seemed to miss is that Adler the modern philosopher was very much in the school of Aristotle and St. Thomas Aquinas. As a Thomist, it was almost inevitable that late in life he should convert to Catholicism. Studying everything seriously for a long lifetime certainly has its dangers.
