RedZone is a commecial
robotics center based in
Pittsburgh. It is actually a spin-off of the
Robotics Institute of
Carnegie Mellon University. After the
Chernobyl accident in 1986, RedZone was founded in order to design practical robots that perform hazardous tasks.
The majority of the robots that come out of RedZone are semi-autonomous machines that work in hazardous environments or in hard to reach places. Their projects have been involved in checking out the reactor core at Three Mile Island. Since humans could not make their way in there, Rosie was developed to monitor the area. Another project was to build a robot that would live in an underground fuel tank and make sure everything was stable.
RedZone has more than a decade of experience in robotics engineering. They have worked for a variety of clients, including NASA, US Department of Defense, the US Department of Energy, and numerous commercial entities.
