place of articulation (thing)

In phonetics, roughly the place in the mouth where a sound is produced. Examples include:

• Bilabial -- both lips, like m and p.
• Labiodental -- the lower lip and the teeth, like f and v.
• Dental -- the teeth, like th, or like the t in Spanish
• Alveolar -- behind the teeth like s or t in English.
• Palato-alveolar -- farther back behind the teeth, like sh.
• Palatal -- the palate, like ch in German ich
• Velar -- at the velum, like g and k.
• Uvular -- at the uvula, like Klingon Q.
• Glottal -- at the glottis, like the sound in uh-oh.
