George Lazenby (person)

George Lazenby was born on September 5, 1939, in Goulburn, Australia. He joined the Australian Army and then turned to selling cars. After being a car salesman for awhile, Lazenby left Australia to head to London to pursue a career as a model. An interesting trivia fact is the day he arrived in London was the same day that Ian Fleming died and also the same day that Pierce Brosnan showed up in the city as well.

In 1968, Sean Connery decided that he would no longer be James Bond. After trying out for the role, Lazenby won the position. Prior to becoming Bond, Lazenby had only appeared in commercials, however he won the role.

Lazenby played Bond in the movie On Her Majesty's Secret Service which had mixed reviews. People shared two feelings about this movie. Either they liked it or they thought Lazenby playing Bond was the biggest mistake in all Bond history. There were stories of conflict occuring on the set between the director Peter Hunt and also the Bond Girl, Diana Rigg.¹

Lazenby turned down the offer to be Bond in the next movie, Diamonds Are Forever and Connery returned as Bond. If you ask Lazenby about his role as Bond, he says that leaving Bond was a mistake, he took some wrong advice. ².

His career floundered for awhile as he searched for his next role. In the 70's, Lazenby moved to Hong Kong where he was going to be involved with some movies starting Bruce Lee, however Lee died before the movies could be made. Lazenby continues to act and star in different roles, in fact he attends many Bond Fan Fests.
