William (Dr.) Scholl, is dead.

The famous footwear maker died from a rare form of pneumonia (not the Rockin' Pneumonia) at a hospice on the Isle of Man. He was 81.

His "Original Exercise Sandal" -- known as Dr. Scholl's, was worn for some 20 years by millions of women and men around the world.

An orthopedic specialist, Scholl designed his wooden clog after finding a simple wooden sandal in Germany in the 1950s. He carved it to fit the arch of the foot, added a leather strap across the toes, and sold it in the United States to great acclaim. Scholl said it would prevent podiatric ailments.
