Philotes,
Amicitia to the
Romans, was the
personification of
affection and
friendship. According to
Hesiod's Theogony, she is the unfathered
daughter of
Nyx, goddess of the night, and
sister to
Cer,
Thanatos,
Hypnos,
Oneiros,
Moros,
Nemesis,
Oizys,
Momus,
Geras,
Apate, and
Eris, as well as the three
Fates:
Clotho,
Laechisis,
Atropos.

The Liturgy of Love, by
Epaphroditus paints a different picture of Philotes' origins. Subtitled "The Proclamation of
The Order of Philotes" The Liturgia Philotetos described her as the daughter of
Aphrodite. Unlike her mother, or her brother
Eros, Philotes is quite
plain in
appearance. This is because she is not a goddess of passion or romantic love, but of affection.
