Here is a little history. In 1926 Abe Saperstein organized and coached a new basketball team called the Savoy Big Five. In 1927 they changed the name to Saperstein's New York Globetrotters later changing their name to the Harlem New York Globetrotters to let people know they were going to be watching black people. The joking around and making fun of the other teams began in 1939 when the Globetrotters had a 112-5 lead over their opponents and began to mock them. Saperstein said as long as they win they can do that. Thats how the legacy began. The team has had many great players but the most notable must be NBA great Wilt Chamberlain.
