The Medicine Bow National Forest is a part of the overall Medicine Bow – Routt National Forest managed area. The area is managed by the United States Forest Service.
The Medicine Bow section is located in Wyoming and Colorado and consists of 1,096,891 acres of forest and open prairie. The national forest reserve was created in 1902. It was named after the Native American term for the location where different tribes came together to improve relations and to search for mahogany, a hardwood that made exceptional bows.
The Snowy Range is located in the reserve and the tallest summit is Medicine Bow Peak, which is a little over 12,000 feet. Vedauwoo is popular with rock climbers, although trying to drive up the Vedauwoo incline is a real bear during the winters.
