Oddly enough, the term for someone who chooses not to advance a grade after having passed it, most often for athletic reasons. The middle/high school equivalent of a college redshirt, the athlete repeats a grade in order to have another year to develop. Common practice in Southwest Virginia. Some counties have outlawed the practice believing it creates an unfair advantage and changes the focus of high school athletics. Sometimes done for academic or maturity reasons, the term is rarely applied in those instances.
