"Be careful what you pretend to be"

Mother Night is a Keith Gordon movie based on a novel by Kurt Vonnegut. It was released in 1996 by Fine Line Features.

The movie is a faithful adaptation of the classic Vonnegut book, and as such is easily the best Vonnegut film adaptation. Less successful endeavours include Breakfast of Champions and Slaughterhouse Five -- both of which are better left to in their written form.

The movie stars Nick Nolte (who surprises in one of his best performances) as Howard W. Campbell Jr. an American playwright in Berlin during the outbreak of World War II. That is until a mysterious American spy in the form of John Goodman convinces him to help the allies in a secret mission (which the allies will deny) to send coded messages via Nazi propaganda.

As the Reich falls, Campbell escapes to the States where he is later forced to confront the reality of his past and his role in it.

The movie boasts a fine cast, also starring Sheryl Lee, Alan Arkin and Kirsten Dunst.

Mother Night is rated R for a sex scene, and has a Run Time of 113 minutes.
