Painting by American artist Jackson Pollock (1912-1956). Typical example of Abstract Expressionism and Action Painting. It illustrates an extreme development of abstraction, without objects, real or imaginary nor even any clearly defined images.

What it represents it the painter's 'action'. Pollock produced it by fastening a huge canvas (3 by 5.5 meters or 9 by 17 feet) to the floor and then dripping, squirting and flinging paints in many colours over the surface. With this he achieved a random effect in which no plan or rational arrangement would be apparent.
