When it should be silent,
he plays rhythms on the countertop.
Thumb playing the bass;
index playing the snare.

A nervous habit, he claims.
Might be like smoking,
or safety blankets,
or other addictions.

When there is no table, he uses my back.
What started as a simple beat
has turned into a full cadence,
playing in time to my heart.
