Formerly part of the Soviet Union, this country has been independent since 1991. It borders Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, China and Afghanistan, and has several little discontinuous areas of territory surrounded by the first two. The CIA World Factbook says it "has experienced three changes of government and a civil war since it gained independence," and that Russian-led peacekeeping troops are still there. Poorest of the former Soviet countries, Tajikstan is mostly agricultural, and the economy has been much weakened by all the conflict. Much of the boundary with China is also in dispute.
