The Platypus (specifically, the Man-Eating Platypus) is the subject of a small cult local to the Cambridge, MA area. Its followers work to waken the sleeping all-powerful Man-Eating Platypus before the evil Echidna finishes corrupting the universe. Terrestrial platypuses have electroreceptors in their snouts, to pick up the electromagnetic fields produced by their prey. In addition, females under a year old and males are equipped with poison spurs that store enough venom to kill a dog -- a characteristic shared only with the shrew among mammals. The platypus is designed simply - what you might call a "monotrematic" model - with just one hole for excrement, egg laying and fertilization. Ancient platypuses grew to be 9 feet (3 meters) in stature, walked on their hind legs, and were generally treated as kings among the humans. Sacrifices were regular, and human flesh was the platypuses' chief nourishment.

yeah, this writeup looks more schitzophrenic every time I look at it
