Kernmantle is a type of rope, characterized by a braided core (kern, from the German) and a woven outer sheath (the mantle). The core provides strength while the sheath maintains flexibility and gives the rope a smooth aspect, reducing snags and kinks.

Most rock climbing ropes are kernmantle ropes, and come in 10mm or 11mm widths, or as narrow as 8mm for use in double rope techniques.
