pigs and hogs

The family Suidae contains eight genera* of pigs, five of which are still existent.

Suids originally occurred across Eurasia south of 48° N, on islands as far away as the Phillipines and Sulawesi, and throughout Africa. They first appeared in the early Oligocene era, and are still going strong.

Suids are medium sized mammals, with a pointed head, short legs, and a stocky body. They have a two-chambered, simple, nonruminating stomach. They have a cartilaginous snout used for digging. Each foot has four toes, the middle two are flattened and form hooves. The other two do not reach the ground. They have long, sharp teeth, and the canines often form tusks, especially in the males. They are omnivorous.
