A consist is a particular set of rolling stock joined together. A train has a particular consist which (as the word implies) is the set of cars it consists of. In American railroading use, consist can refer either to the entire train or to the particular set of locomotives attached to a train (as in a power consist or motive consist). For trains which are usually operated as a particular consist in a particular order, the term set or trainset is used (examples include the French TGV or the Amtrak Acela, which have standardized configurations).
