A particular type of rim shot, which is a particular stroke that one can do on a drum. Ping shots are used especially on marching snares. They are executed almost exactly like a regular rim shot, except that you pull your arm back some so that the tip of the stick strikes the drum head only 2-3" from the rim (as opposed to the center of the head), and the shoulder of the stick strikes the rim, rather than some midpoint of the shaft. The sound that is produced is pitched more than a regular shot, because if marching snares are struck off-center, they ring a lot more. The sound still has the quality of a shot, but is not as loud as a regular rimshot. A ping shot in drumspeak is, suprisingly enough, "ping". There may be other variants, but I haven't heard them.
