Not exactly the follow-up album to Moon Safari, The Original Motion Picture Score for The Virgin Suicides follows its namesake: it is the musical score for The Virgin Suicides, the directional debut of Sofia Copola. It was released by the dynamic duo on February 29, 2000. Unlike their previous work, Air's work on The Virgin Suicides is short (only three of the thirteen tracks exceed three minutes in length) and minimal. This is partly due to the album's difference in purpose: it is supposed to be minimal and unobtrusive. Besides Playground Love (the only remotely radio friendly piece), Highschool Lover (a piano solo with ethereal undercurrents), and Suicide Underground, this record is little more than the background music for a movie. That is, however, exactly what it is supposed to be, and Air excels at it.
