Cape"lin (?), n. [Cf. F. capelan, caplan.] Zool.

A small marine fish (Mallotus villosus) of the family Salmonidae, very abundant on the coasts of Greenland, Iceland, Newfoundland, and Alaska. It is used as a bait for the cod.
