Southernmost of the San Francisco Bay Bridges, the Dumbarton connects Newark, California & Fremont, California on the east side to Menlo Park, California & Palo Alto, California on the west side. California Highway 84 runs across the bridge, which takes its name from Dumbarton Point, the peninsula between the east end of the bridge and the toll plaza several miles to the east.

The original Dumbarton Bridge was a two-lane span with a lifting section for boat traffic. It was built with private funds and opened in 1927 as the first automobile bridge across the San Francisco Bay. The state government purchased the bridge for $2.5 million in 1951, and replaced it with a new six-lane high-rise bridge in 1982.

CalTrans charges a toll of $2 on westbound traffic only.
