Diabetes caused by destruction of the beta cells of the Islets of Langerhans in the pancreas.

The child that presents with type of diabetes sometimes presents with ketoacidosis in the Emergency Room with symptoms of polyuria, polydipsia, nocturia and recent weight loss (over weeks) - this child is unwell, has an increased respiratory rate (Kussmaul breathing) and you might smell ketones on his breath.

Expected test results are usually: glycosuria (glucose in the urine), ketonuria (ketones in the urine), a raised blood glucose level.

IDDM can also sometimes be an incidental finding in an asymptomatic patient.
