The fruitfly (Drosophila melanogaster) is a small fly. It is much beloved of geneticists, since it has (relatively) easily visible phenotypes, and a short generation time. Celera sequenced its entire genome, as a proof of concept of their whole chromosome shotgun sequencing method.
