The fruitfly (
Drosophila melanogaster) is a small
fly. It is much beloved of
geneticists, since it has (relatively) easily visible
phenotypes, and a short
generation time.
Celera sequenced its entire
genome, as a
proof of concept of their whole
chromosome shotgun sequencing method.
