After his defeat near Poltava in 1709 the Swedish King Karl XII fled across the Russian/Turkish border and established his headquarters in Bender, which at the time was Turkish.

The Sultan did not like this much and after a small battle between Turkish troops and Swedish Karoliner in 1711 Karl XII returned to Sweden.
