Does the pace of technology outpace our ability to use it for good? (idea)

I'm sitting in work researching mobile internet technologies, when this thought hits me. Let me present a few examples for you to consider

• Gunpowder - originally, I believe, for fireworks, has now turned to be used for the extinguishing of life.
• Atomic Power - the discovery of the atom, and it's consituant parts, demonstrated by nuclear weapons
• The internet - whilst a well of useful information, also a hot bed for the transport of child pornography
• Encryption - useful for those in politically harsh regimes to communicate with the outside world, yet also turned to criminal usage where law enforcement can no longer keep up.

Are we moving faster than we can control? Are we painting ourselves into a corner as we invent and discover more and more?

Should we be worried?
