By Jacques Prevert

Tu dis que tu aimes les oiseaux
Et tu les mets en cage.
Tu dis que tu aimes les poissons
Et tu fais frire.
Tu dis que tu aimes les fleurs
Et tu leur coupes la queue.
Alors quand tu dis que tu m'aimes
Je commence à avoir peur.

You say that you love birds
And you put them in a cage.
You say that you love fish
And you fry them.
You say that you love flowers
And you cut their stem.
Then when you say that you love me
I start to be afraid.

Whenever I read this poem, I cannot help but think of a line from The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe
by Lily in Part One as she directly addresses the audience:

I worry if peanut oil comes from peanuts
and olive oil comes from olives, where does
baby oil come from?
