The telephone rings, the voice on the other end sounds girlish and childish
They ask to speak to my daughter I tell her the call is for her
She asks who it is
I tell her I don’t know
She takes the phone from my hand
She says hello….
Kevin
and scampers upstairs
and closes the door
and I hear the sound of muffled laughter

After a half an hour or so, she comes back downstairs,
Her cheeks flushed and rosy
I decide not to ask, for as far as I know
it’s her first phone call from a boy
She sees my smile though and she says
“It’s not what you think, it’s about Spanish homework
I think to myself today is Valentine's Day
and even if it wasn’t
it’s never about Spanish homework

I was young once too…
