Education in Australia (idea)

Some of the above details differ to varying degrees from state-to-state, although in many cases only in the form of different names for the same things.

For example, in Western Australia:

• Primary school starts on average six months earlier than in most other states, and goes for seven years.
• High school lasts for five years, rather than six.
• The Higher School Certificate is known as the Tertiary Entrance Exam or TEE. It is possible to do Years 11 and 12 without doing TEE, usually for the purpose of increasing the likelihood of getting into TAFE.
• A UAI is called a TER, or Tertiary Entrance Rank here. A TER of 80 in Western Australia means exactly the same as a UAI of 80 in New South Wales.
