A technique used by firefighters and urban search and rescue teams to rescue people who are trapped or entombed, particularly in disasters such as earthquakes and hurricanes. Heavy rescue involves the painstakingly precise use of heavy apparatus and equipment such as bulldozers to carefully lift debris and collapsed buildings off of survivors. Because firefighters will be engaged in many tasks including heavy rescue after major disasters, they are less available to respond to emergency calls and 911 for less serious emergencies.
