temporal lobe epilepsy (thing)

Temporal lobe epilepsy can cause elaborate and multiple sensory, motor, and/or psychotic difficulties. One doesn't have to flop around like a drooling fish to have Temporal Lobe Epilepsy.

Symptoms can include:

• smelling unusual smells that no one else can smell
• tasting unusual tastes for no reason
• clouding of conciousness and possible amnesia for varying periods of time
• hearing irregularities
• difficulty breathing
• perceptual changes (visual problems, including mild hallucinations)
• unexpected bursts of anger
• unexpected emotional outbursts
• fear
• severe hypergraphia
• severe hyper-religiousness
• recurrent nightmares of stereotyped kind
• frequent subjective paranormal experiences e.g. telepathy, mediumistic trance, automatic writing, visualization of presences or lights/colors around people, dream ESP, out-of body experiences, alleged healing abilities
• automatisms

An EEG often reveals spike discharges in the temporal lobe during sleep.

This is treated with anticonvulsants.
