Pip the troll was originally Prince Gofern of the planet Laxidazia. He had no real talents other than his ability to paint starscapes (basically an all-black canvas with white dots here and there). He met up with a band of trolls and drank their brew. Of course, this turned him into a troll. He was kicked out of the royal court and proceeded to live a life of vice and debauchery. Eventually, he was taken prisoner by the Universal Church of Truth. This is where he met Adam Warlock, who was battling the Magus at the time.
Pip acted as sort of a sidekick for awhile. However, he ran afoul of Thanos and was lobotomized. Adam Warlock took his soul into the soul gem, where Pip lived for some time.
When Thanos tried to take over the universe using the Infinity Gauntlet, Adam Warlock brought himself, Pip, and Gamora back to life. Pip became a member of The Infinity Watch, and guardian of the space gem. The space gem allowed him to teleport to anywhere he or someone he was touching had been. Although he no longer has the gem (it doesn't exist any more), he can still teleport because of his long association with it.
