Nature spirits and followers of
Dionysus (the
Greek god of
ecstasy,
wine and
music), the satyrs were half men and half
goats. They originally represented the
amoral, lazy and pleasure-seeking sides of
human nature, but were later identified, in
Christian Europe, with the
Devil.
