Alan Seeger was born in New York City June 22, 1888. Educated at Harvard University, Seeger became editor of the Harvard Monthly in 1906 and graduated in 1910.

He moved to Paris' Latin Quarter in 1912 and enlisted in the Foreign Legion in 1914.

Alan Seeger died in the Battle of Somme at Belloy-en-Santerre, France on July 4, 1916.
