Broadside Magazine was started by Sis Cunningham, Pete Seeger, (of SINGOUT! magazine) and Gil Turner who penned these explanatory words on its first cover from February 1962: "Topical songs have been an important part of America's music since Colonial Days...BROADSIDE may never publish a song that could be called a 'folk song'. But many of our best folksongs were topical songs at their inception..."

Bob Dylan had his first printed song of the five on this mimeographed edition, "Talking John Birch Blues."
