On October 17, 1985 a musical adaptation by Polly Pen and Peggy Harmon opened at the Vineyard Theater. The show was set in an old nursery formerly shared by Laura and Lizzie filled with oversize doll houses and furniture. Much of the text of the poem was set to Victorian music as they relive their experiences with the goblins. Lighting cues were used to represent the goblins as they spoke through the mouths of the sisters. Critics praised the creative staging and wonderful, evocative score. There is a professional video on file at the Lincoln Center Archives and an original cast recording for anyone interested in exploring the show.
