Joe Sacco is a comicbook artist, best known for his award winning series Palestine. He is often compared to art spiegelman in that his work transcends the comics genre, reaches large audiences and wins awards usually reserved for books without pictures.

In 1996, Joe Sacco won the American Book Award for the Palestine series, a first-person journalistic account of the situation in the occupied territories, told in comics form.

His newest work is called Safe Area Gorazde, set in the war-torn former Yugoslavia. The book focuses on the Muslim enclave of Gorazde, which was besieged by Bosnian Serbs during the war. Sacco spent four weeks in Gorazde in 1996, entering before the Muslims trapped inside had access to the outside world, electricity or running water.
