Baduk (also spelled paduk in some cases) is the
Korean name for
go (the
Japanese term) or
qi (the
Chinese term).
Baduk/go/qi is a game of territory. Who ever controls the most territory at the end of the game wins.
The playing board is often 9x9, 13x13, or 19x19 in size. Pieces are placed at the intersection of gridlines, unlike chess or checkers which place pieces in the square drawn by intersecting gridlines.
Playing pieces are black for one side and white for the other. Playing pieces are traditionally made of glass, stone, or shell.
The stronger player usually plays white and the weaker player plays black. Depending on the strength of the players, white may spot black a number of handicap stones which are placed on the board before play begins.
