I remember her as I first saw her

sitting at a table by the window

The lights of the restaurant placed her almost in shadow

a second hand echo

She had her head down, looking at her phone

blue squares reflected off her glasses

Her eyes were also blue

different shades for different moods

Matched with smiles,  sometimes

other times,   tears

Now the sky is painted,  In a wash of indigo

I've been holding on too long,  in the howling of this cold--

Strangest thing-  The war on drugs
