. Must have been late afternoon,
I could tell by how far the child's shadow
stretched out. . .
Dishwalla Counting blue cars

.

The evening comes to a close
shadows slide from the woods to our house

Dusk, another day ends
sunlight fades, stars replace clouds

Summer, exhausted, calls it quits
sprinklers worn out, have given up
leaving the neighbor's yard brown and evenings, quiet.

If there are crickets still around, they are keeping to themselves.
