The cards of
Crowley thoth tarot deck were painted by
Lady Frieda Harris and designed by
Aleister Crowley. The deck was created between 1938 and 1943. Those paintings selected for the final deck where exhibited twice in 1941 but the deck was not published before 1969.
Harris created three versions of '
The Magician':
First The black magician who uses his
powers selfishly. Then the white magician who uses his
powers for the good and
the
transcendental magician who knows
light and
darkness and integrates both into his own self.
Aleister Crowley authorized only the transcendental magician to be included in the final deck but some editions include all three magician.
