Buddy Ryan was a Defensive Coordinator for the Chicago Bears. He developed the 46 defense for the Bears which helped them win the Super Bowl in 1985. In 1986 he became head coach for the Philadelphia Eagles. In 1992 he was fired after being said to have led the Eagles to the 'brink of greatness'. Later in his career he punched a fellow assistant coach (on his team!) on national television.

Buddy Ryan was also an eccentric ex-mental patient on Night Court from 1988 to 1990. He was played by John Astin. Later in his appearance on the show we found out he was Harry's father.
