There are people who think the United States will fight a war with China in the next few decades.

By far the most likely cause of such a war would be Taiwan. The United States has made a commitment to defend Taiwan by any means necessary. China has stated many times that Taiwan is a breakaway province of China and must be reunified by any means necessary. Taiwan has responded with ambiguous formulations which leave the Chinese government increasingly frustrated, and has shown no desire to give up its own autonomy for reunification in practice.

American military technology is currently far superior to Chinese, and the United States government has far more resources to equip its military with. This would provide the United States with a number of advantages.

China has only two potential neutralizing factors. They are much nearer to Taiwan than the United States is, and the Chinese people might well be more willing to accept large quantities of Chinese blood shed in a war over Taiwan.
