Frances Bean Cobain is the daughter of Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love.

Frances was conceived when Kurt and Courtney were still dating. Courtney claimed it was a sign from God, and they rushed off to get married in Hawaii.

Frances was born at 7:48 AM on August 18, 1992 at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles. Her birth followed much controversy. There had been a lot of bad media surrounding Kurt and Courtney, and articles had been published about their heroin use. Axl Rose of Guns N' Roses was quoted saying

"Kurt Cobain is a fucking junkie with a junkie wife. And if the baby's born deformed, I think they both ought to go to prison."
She was a healthy, blue eyed baby girl.

Many believe that Frances was named after Frances Farmer, the Northwest actor. This is not correct in any way. The inspiration for Frances Bean's name came from two things:

  • Kurt was a big fan of The Vaselines, in fact it was mostly because of his promotion that they grew in popularity. He decided to name his daughter after one of his idols, Frances McKee, one of the singers and guitarists in The Vaselines.
  • When Kurt and Courtney went to get an ultrasound, Kurt obsessively watched the video and said "look at that little bean." This is where he and Courtney got the idea for Frances' middle name. An image from this ultrasound can be seen on the sleeve in the Lithium single.
