We were basically next door at that point. We could have started the ball rolling at a moment's notice. It wouldn't have even taken five minutes.

The only thing keeping us back was worries about how he'd react.

We were pretty sure he understood enough of the picture by then that the shock would have been minimal, but what if he didn't? He was so used to keeping his thoughts close to his vest that it was hard even to help him. The last thing we wanted was for him to freak out. We were on his side after all. 

We wanted to be on his side.

Yeah, so we had been ready to go for I don't even know how long at that point. It was almost a joke that the turkey was basically ready to serve, but everyone was afraid to take it out of the oven.
