One of the London Boroughs, in the south-west, bordering and postally included in Surrey. Covers the areas of Kingston, Surbiton, New Malden and Norbiton.
Kingston itself has Saxon foundations: it used to be where kings were crowned. On the river, er, Thames. A fairly attractive and expensive little town, with good shops and a small market. Nice walks down the river, good riverside pubs.
Eadweard Muybridge, who invented motion photography, was born here, and there's a small museum of his works.
