No one deserved to be
         shot in the back
like the way they did my little sister

She murmured lullabies patiently
carried torches for people
closed their eyes, dropped the bag, in her hands

She never knew she had a heart
it was big and hot and dangerous
(No one thought to teach her how to use it)

"It's all so selfishly beautiful"
as she walks beneath handbags
and mortgage and the cadence of November

She finally shed life away, its
    shrapnel such a weight
Brought her back to quiet towns and words

She made it back to the city
and fell underfoot
Could not bring herself back up to speed

What would we be without all the
world's burning little fools
?

She came home.

She walked downtown to the family store
opened it up and hung a sign on the door
