I had problems for a long time remembering which type of division was which - was it mitosis that was diploid and meiosis that was haploid, or was it the other way round?

Not being the best memorizer in the world, this gave me trouble, until I came up with an easy way to remember it:

meiosis makes my os (ova) -> haploid division for reproduction

mitosis makes my toes -> diploid division for growth

Stupid, yet effective! This helped me greatly through anatomy and physiology as well as maternal/child nursing...
