At the time of its introduction in 1998, the Yamaha R1 was the fastest production motorcycle in the world, being capable of 196 mph and with an acceleration of 0-60 in about 1.85 seconds, as stock. Basically a derivative of the YZF class motorcycle, an inline 4-cylinder model produced and refined by Yamaha for many years, the R1 turned the superbike world upside-down in the same way that Honda's CBR900 Fireblade had done a decade earlier.
